Choosing a business bank account in Switzerland

The right business bank account supports your payments, collections and accounting at a cost that fits your activity. A freelancer invoicing in Swiss francs has different needs from a cash-handling shop or an SME trading in euros. Here is how to compare the options and prepare your application.

Start with your actual banking needs

Describe a normal month: customer invoices, supplier payments, payroll, cards and currencies. Add occasional transactions such as equipment purchases, borrowing, capital deposits and cash payments.

Business profile Priorities
Self-employed, mainly CHF Dedicated account, straightforward payments and easy statement sharing
Retail or restaurant Card acceptance, cash deposits and settlement times
SME with employees Batch payments, individual access rights and payroll approval
International business Currency accounts, exchange margins and incoming/outgoing payment fees
New LLC or SA Capital deposit, bank confirmation and transition to operating account

For a sole proprietorship, a dedicated account makes private and business transactions easier to separate. Check that the banking product permits commercial use. An incorporated company should bank in its own name, without mixing receipts into a shareholder’s personal account.

Payments, accounting, access and English-language support

Check support for Swiss QR-bills, batch payments and your accounting software. A PDF is useful for reading a statement, but structured bank data, such as camt files, makes reconciliation easier. Discuss export formats and bank feeds with your accounting provider.

Separate view-only access, payment preparation and payment approval. An administrator can prepare a payment batch without being able to release it. Dual approval helps control larger amounts. Each user should have an individual login for traceability.

For an English-speaking owner, check the language of online banking, contracts, statements and customer support separately. An English website does not guarantee every document or support channel is available in English.

Ask how to block a card or process an urgent payment and when support is available. If you will need credit, review actual financing products and assessment criteria. Opening an account does not guarantee a future loan. A documented business plan and cash-flow forecast can help prepare a financing discussion.

Compare the full annual cost

A free introductory offer may become less attractive after adding cards, foreign payments or currency conversion. Compare a representative year after promotions expire.

  • Account maintenance and required cards.
  • Transactions exceeding included volumes.
  • International payment and intermediary-bank charges.
  • Exchange-rate margin as well as the visible commission.
  • Cash deposits and withdrawals.
  • Separately billed statements, confirmations and interfaces.

Example: two accounts may have similar fixed fees. If your company regularly converts substantial euro amounts, a small difference in exchange margin can matter more than the maintenance charge. Ask each provider to simulate the same annual volumes and currencies.

Also allow for administrative time. Poor exports or repeated manual handling can outweigh a low account fee. Evaluate any bundled insurance on its own merits rather than buying it solely to obtain free banking.

Swiss business banking options to compare

The following selection preserves the providers covered in the French article. It is a comparison starting point, not a ranking. Product pages and available information were checked on 19 September 2026. Fees and eligibility depend on the product and applicant.

Provider Offer to examine Points to check
UBS Business account; CHF current account and capital-deposit option Standard maintenance advertised at CHF 20 per quarter; cards and other services extra. Check promotional conditions and eligibility for the digital application. English product information available.
PostFinance Business account in CHF Standard maintenance advertised at CHF 5 per month. Check currency accounts, transaction conditions and time-limited or start-up offers. English product information available.
BCGE BCGE Entreprises Check admission, current tariff and services directly with the bank. An English product listing is available; no unverified fee is quoted here.
BCV Business accounts Compare payment fees, currencies and online-banking rights. Linked comparison page is in French; confirm English support for your needs.
Raiffeisen Business accounts and SME services Check the chosen local bank’s pricing, services and language support. Linked product information is in French.
Migros Bank Business accounts and cards Confirm currencies, payment services, opening requirements and language support. Linked product information is in French.

UBS lists conditions for its digital opening route involving residence, identity documents, shareholding and signing authority. Do not treat those route-specific conditions as the general legal requirements for forming a Swiss company.

PostFinance’s published standard price and temporary fee waivers should likewise be assessed separately. Confirm the offer that applies when you apply, including any conditions or additional charges.

Ask every shortlisted provider for the same quotation based on your legal form, ownership, activity and transaction pattern. For a digital financial service, check whether it accepts your business structure and identify the legal institution holding the funds. A personal app account is not automatically suitable for an LLC or SA.

Account opening and capital deposits

The bank needs to understand ownership, representation, business activity and expected transactions. Prepare the business name, registered office, representatives’ identification, controlling persons, source of funds and expected payment flows.

For an existing company, include the commercial-register extract and requested incorporation documents. Disclose foreign-resident owners and multi-company ownership structures from the outset. These can affect the documentation and review process.

For cash incorporation of an LLC or SA, a capital deposit account holds the funds before registration. The bank issues the confirmation required for incorporation. Release then follows the bank’s requirements and supporting documents.

Ask whether the deposit account becomes the operating account, whether funds can be transferred elsewhere, and what fees apply. Allow time for the bank’s review before committing to an incorporation date. Keep the statutory share-capital requirements separate from your wider operating budget.

A foreign company opening a Swiss branch should confirm the bank’s requirements for the parent company, authorised representatives and beneficial owners before applying.

Protect liquidity and manage a bank change

Eligible deposits are protected up to CHF 100,000 per client and per bank under the Swiss deposit-protection system. The limit covers the combined eligible accounts of the same client at the same legal bank; opening several accounts does not multiply it. Companies can qualify, subject to excluded depositor categories.

An LLC or SA is separate from its owner. A sole proprietor’s private and business deposits at the same bank are aggregated for this limit. Check the bank behind the brand and whether the particular funds qualify. Protection is not a substitute for an operational backup if an account becomes temporarily unavailable.

When switching banks, keep a transition period. Update invoice and QR-payment details, customers, payroll and direct debits. Export statements and supporting records before closing the old relationship. Test an incoming and an outgoing payment.

Frequently asked questions

Does a sole proprietor need a business account?

A dedicated account is very useful for tracking profit and proving expenses. Check the bank’s terms, since a private account may prohibit commercial use. A separate account does not create a separate legal person or shield private assets.

Can I open a Swiss business account entirely online?

Some providers offer a digital process, subject to legal form, residence, identity documents and signing rights. Corporate shareholders or foreign representatives can require a different review. Ask for the applicable process and document list before planning incorporation.

Must the capital-deposit bank become my main bank?

Check the product terms. Some arrangements convert the deposit account into an operating account; others may allow funds to move to another institution. Compare release fees and formalities with long-term banking costs.

Does a cheaper account always reduce costs?

No. Low fixed fees can be offset by currency conversion, per-transaction charges, awkward exports and manual work. Compare total cost against your actual transactions and future needs.
