Swiss tax return deadline extensions: Geneva and Vaud in 2026
Missing a bank statement or waiting for completed accounts? An extension may be available, but the procedure depends on the canton and taxpayer. Here are the Geneva and Vaud rules, with a request template to adapt.

Key takeaways
- The dates below mainly concern the 2025 tax year, filed in 2026.
- A filing extension does not automatically postpone tax payments, appeals or special refund claims.
- Identify the deadline, use the correct channel and keep the authority’s confirmation.
2026 filing calendar: identify your situation first
Switzerland has no single filing deadline for every return. Distinguish an individual’s return, a sole proprietor’s business figures included in their personal return, and a separate SA/AG or Sàrl/GmbH company return.
| Situation | Ordinary 2026 position | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Geneva individual | Initial deadline: 31 March 2026 | Request an extension through the cantonal procedure |
| Geneva company with year-end 31 December 2025 | Ordinary deadline: 30 April 2026 | Company-specific conditions and the notice received |
| Vaud individual with unlimited tax liability | Base date: 15 March; general tolerance to 30 June 2026 | Non-working-day adjustment applies to the base date |
| Same Vaud taxpayer requesting an ordinary extension | Request by 30 June for an extension to 30 September 2026 | Directive conditions and the extension granted |
| Initial Geneva DRIS/TOU request for 2025 | 31 March 2026 | Separate strict deadline |
15 March 2026 fell on a Sunday, so Vaud’s next-working-day rule applies. The general 30 June tolerance remains the practical reference for the individuals covered by that rule.
This table does not cover every estate, end-of-liability return, Vaud company or special procedure. A personal reminder or decision must be read before using the standard process. Do not carry these dates into the 2027 filing season without checking.
How to request an extension in Geneva
Personal tax returns
Available channels include the online tax account, the online form without an account, the telephone voice service and a written request. Identify the taxpayer and tax year, not merely the year in which you are filing.
From 1 January to 31 October, the ordinary channels operate under the published procedure. From 1 November to 31 December, a reasoned letter is required. Requests are not absolutely impossible after October, but approval depends on the authority’s assessment.
| Extension duration | Published fee |
|---|---|
| Up to 3 months | CHF 20 |
| Up to 5 months | CHF 40 |
| More than 5 months | CHF 60 |
Check the granted date and fee, particularly for a further request. Paying a fee does not let you choose any deadline. Requests are refused in situations including an already-filed return, an assessment by default already issued, or an extension already granted to the same or a later date.
If your main domicile remains in another Swiss canton, Geneva provides a procedure to request the same extension as that canton, with the relevant reason and evidence.
Companies
SA and Sàrl companies use the business procedure. For a 31 December year-end, the ordinary deadline is 30 April of the following year. Different year-ends or special situations require checking the actual notice.
The published fee scale is also CHF 20, CHF 40 or CHF 60. Company conditions include full payment of the instalments due. A sole proprietor should not select the legal-entity procedure merely because they run a business.
Vaud: general tolerance versus an individual extension
For 2025 individual returns with unlimited tax liability, the 2026 directive allows a general filing tolerance until 30 June 2026, without an individual request within that scope.
An ordinary extension to 30 September 2026 can then be requested under the directive, no later than 30 June. The specified procedure is free. September is not automatic for every taxpayer. The directive also distinguishes requests made by 15 May from those made from 16 May.
A further extension requires a written, substantiated force-majeure request with supporting evidence, submitted by 30 September. The directive sets 31 October as the exceptional limit, subject to its next-working-day rule. Follow the date actually communicated.
Limited liability and special situations
For covered taxpayers domiciled outside Vaud or Switzerland with limited tax liability, the directive gives a 30 September deadline and tolerance until 30 November. The ordinary e-Délai process is not available indiscriminately to those cases.
Death, departure and other endings of tax liability can have their own deadlines. Contact the authority using the notice received. Representatives making grouped requests must follow the separate directive for advisers, not substitute the individual-request rules.
The individual-request directive excludes extensions once a formal reminder has been issued, even in force-majeure cases. At that stage, examine the specific procedural position immediately.
An extension-request template to adapt
A useful written request identifies the taxpayer, year, reason and proposed date. Provide evidence where a specific justification is required. This English drafting example is not an official form or a guarantee of acceptance; adapt the language and format to the receiving authority’s requirements.
Subject: request to extend the tax-return filing deadline — tax year [year]
Dear Sir or Madam,
I request an extension until [requested date] to file the tax return for [individual or company name], tax reference [number].
The reason for this request is [specific reason]. We are currently awaiting [documents or information]. The necessary steps are underway and the expected receipt date is [date].
Please confirm whether the extension is granted and any applicable conditions. I can provide the supporting evidence required.
Yours faithfully,
[Name, capacity as representative if relevant, contact details, date and signature where required]
This is not a request to postpone payment. For online filing, enter the equivalent information in the provided fields rather than sending duplicate requests through several channels.
After submission, retain confirmation, the new deadline and a list of outstanding documents. Use the tax-return document checklist to turn the extra time into a realistic completion plan.
Does an extension postpone payment or prevent interest?
Not automatically. Instalments and tax bills have separate due dates. A return may be validly extended while payments are overdue.
If earnings or profit changed, an adjustment to instalments may be appropriate. If cash flow is the problem, ask about the relevant payment-arrangement procedure. Neither follows automatically from a filing-extension request.
Businesses should align three calendars: year-end accounting, tax-return preparation and payments. Repeated extensions do not resolve incomplete underlying accounts.
Late returns and deadlines that need separate attention
An ordinary return is already late
Check whether a valid extension exists, read the latest correspondence, contact the authority and assemble the available evidence. A formal reminder, default assessment or appeal cannot be handled as if it were an initial ordinary request. Use verified documents rather than inventing provisional figures to remove a deadline.
Geneva withholding-tax correction and TOU
For 2025 income, the initial DRIS/TOU request was due by 31 March 2026. Geneva says not to wait for missing documents before submitting that initial request on time. An ordinary return extension does not extend it.
A voluntary subsequent ordinary assessment can change the overall tax result and does not guarantee a refund. It cannot simply be cancelled because the result is unfavourable. Review the Geneva withholding-tax procedure first.
Also track the separate deadline for anticipatory withholding-tax refunds. Older income may require action before year-end even when the current return follows another timetable.
If an accountant is handling the extension, explicitly agree that task and obtain confirmation. Sending an invoice or signing an accounting mandate is not proof that an extension has been requested.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Geneva tax-return extension free?
Geneva generally charges CHF 20, CHF 40 or CHF 60 depending on the extension duration. Check the current scale and the decision for your request.
Does Vaud automatically allow filing until September?
No. For the covered unlimited-liability individuals, general tolerance is until 30 June 2026. An ordinary extension to 30 September requires a request under the directive. Limited-liability cases have different dates.
Does a missing document always justify an extension?
No. The request must use the correct procedure and meet the deadline and justification requirements. Exceptional extensions can require documented force majeure.
Can my accountant request an extension?
Yes, subject to the applicable authority, access and procedure. Agree the task explicitly and obtain confirmation. Vaud’s grouped requests have separate rules.
Does a filing extension prevent interest on unpaid tax?
Not necessarily. It concerns filing, not automatically payment. Review instalments and bills separately and use the appropriate payment procedure if needed.
